EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — As National Hispanic Heritage Month unfolds, Raising Cane’s in West El Paso is celebrating with a musical twist.
The Franklin High School Mariachi group has been performing at the restaurant every Monday throughout September, serenading customers with traditional mariachi music.
Mike Hernandez, the Franklin High School Mariachi Director, expressed his appreciation for the event, which also serves as a fundraising effort, saying, “What Raising Cane’s is doing in our community is providing a good, safe environment in honor of these good times we are having in our local community by inviting the Franklin High School mariachi group to participate in this celebration and we love it.”
Speaking to KFOX14/CBS4 on Monday, Hernandez highlighted the significance of the performances, stating that they not only show the importance of mariachi programs in local high schools but also play a vital role in preserving cultural heritage in West Texas.
“It’s bringing awareness to not only the culture of mariachi music but also the programs we provide here in El Paso, especially at EPISD. We have mariachi programs in our high schools where we go and compete at the state level, and these programs are important to our heritage and our culture, especially here in West Texas,” Hernandez said.
Mariachi student Rubi Sandoval expressed her enthusiasm for the performances, stating on Monday, “It makes me feel great. I love going out, singing, and connecting with the audience. You get to, you know, spread the feelings through music.”
For those who have missed the performances, there is still one more opportunity to enjoy the music as the Franklin High School Mariachi group will perform again on Monday, September 29th.
