ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Hillman Elementary School celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a colorful school assembly that brought music, dancing and culture to the school’s gym.
Leading up to the big day, students and teachers decorated classroom doors to honor Hispanic traditions.
During an assembly Thursday, Oct. 2, students were treated to live mariachi music, traditional Latin American dances by groups like “Grupo de Baile Mosaico Cultural,” and a surprise appearance by Principal Rj Kuligowski, who jumped in to dance alongside performers.

“Kids don’t care what you know, they care that you care and something as simple as me getting into a costume and dancing is a way that I can show that I care,” said Principal Kuligowski.
With many students coming from diverse cultural backgrounds, school leaders say they wanted the celebration to help all students feel seen, valued and proud of who they are.
“Celebrating the backgrounds that our kids come from helps them know that they are loved and appreciated. When kids feel safe and they feel loved, then they’re willing to learn,” said Kuligowski.
Hispanic Heritage Month is observed Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.
