LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – The warm smell of freshly baked pastries filled Quickie Bakery on Jan. 6 as families gathered to purchase roscas for Día de Reyes, also known as Three Kings’ Day.
The Latin and Hispanic cultural tradition brought community members together to celebrate the epiphany with the traditional sweet bread that contains hidden plastic baby Jesus figures.
For Rafael David Hinojosa, the bakery represents childhood memories of visiting with his grandparents after school.
“Get some cuernitos for breakfast, and some roscas, I have always come here since I was little. To me, I feel like they have the best pan dulce in Laredo, Texas,” Hinojosa said.
Quickie Bakery is one of many Laredo bakeries that prepare for Three Kings’ Day as early as mid-December. manager Alfredo Rodman said the bakery sold more than 1,000 roscas to the Laredo community last year.
“Rosca de Reyes is traditionally part of our Hispanic and Latin culture, dates back hundreds of years, and it’s something that all along the border, and here in Laredo, people celebrate,” Rodman said.
In Mexico, more than 4 million roscas de reyes are sold nationwide every year.
For Reina Jimenez, Three Kings’ Day marked a special celebration as she and her 6-year-old son both celebrated birthdays on Jan. 6.
“Today is actually my birthday, I was born on this day, I have a six year old son and his birthday is today as well, and we decided to come today just to try the rosca, because it actually looks pretty good,” Jimenez said.
Jimenez said she was excited to celebrate their birthdays while creating new memories with her family. Her son chose a birthday cupcake to mark the occasion.
Rodman said he hopes the roscas bring families and friends together to create lasting memories.
