LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Navigating life in the United States as an immigrant doesn’t come with a handbook. One local organization is helping women find community and confidence navigating a system in their own language.
For many immigrant mothers, navigating life in the United States doesn’t just mean learning a new language; it means learning an entirely new system.
“So now part of my organization’s mission is to provide that information and guide parents in navigating the education system, as Hispanic immigrants, we don’t know how it works,” said Selena Lozata.
Padres en Liderazgo, or Parents in Leadership, is an organization all about helping immigrant mothers navigate life in the U.S.
“People don’t know that there are magnet schools, charter schools, virtual schools, homeschooling, and then don’t give their children those opportunities,” Lozata said.
Director Selena Lozata says the organization was born from her own experience when she immigrated to the U.S.
“As an immigrant, I couldn’t find the necessary resources, and it was very important for me to know where to go and what kind of schools to look for,” Lozata said.
Thursday’s workshop focused on empowering immigrant mothers to take time for themselves, and connect over sweet bread and coffee.
“I gave myself the opportunity to come because it’s important to get out of the house and not be cooped up all the time, because there are many difficult situations that we are going through as a community and sometimes, I worry too much,” said participant Macaria Ramirez.
Participant Macaria Ramirez says navigating motherhood in a new country can feel isolating, but Padres en Liderazgo is a good reminder she is not alone.
“I believe it is necessary for our community and for our Latina women that we sometimes shut ourselves away,” Ramirez said.
The organization says what started as a response to one immigrant mother’s need has grown into a network of parents. They add that they always welcome new members.
