HOUSTON — The Houston area has lost a broadcast news legend. Dave Ward, the longtime anchor at KTRK, has died at the age of 86, the station announced Saturday.
Ward was on the air for more than 50 years in Houston, delivering the news to generations of Houstonians.
According to his online bio, Ward was born in Dallas on May 6, 1939, and grew up in Huntsville, where his father was a pastor. David got interested in media while a student at Tyler Junior College. But it wasn’t television at first. Ward broke into the business as a DJ for KGKB.
He moved to Waco, then to Houston in the radio business. In Houston, he was the night news reporter for 1230 KNUZ-AM and KQUE. He would eventually become the news director.
Ward left radio and joined KTRK in 1966 as a reporter. A year later, they put him in the anchor desk and by 1968, he was the station’s main anchor.
Before he retired, he was awarded the Guinness World Record for the longest career as a news broadcaster at one station.
Our thoughts are with Dave Ward’s family, our colleagues at KTRK, and generations of Houstonians who grew up watching Ward deliver the news.
