Louisiana Tech kicker/punter John Hoyet Chance was named Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Chance played a key role in Tech’s 49-14 win over New Mexico State on Saturday. The Shreveport native gave the Bulldogs their first points of the game with a 55-yard field goal, tying for the third-longest make in program history. It was the first field goal attempt and make of his career. His 55-yard make is the longest field goal in CUSA this season.
He punted four times for 186 yards, averaging 46.5 yards per punt. Two of his punts traveled 50 or more yards, while one was downed inside the 20-yard line. He also kicked off nine times, recording eight touchbacks.
This marks Chance’s second CUSA Special Teams Player of the Week honor, having also earned the award in Week one against Southeastern. The redshirt freshman has punted 20 times this season with an average punt of 43.4 yards. Eight of his punts have been downed inside the 20-yard line. Chance has tallied 13 touchbacks on 14 kickoff opportunities.
