This weekend’s snowstorm could bring up to two feet of snow to Colorado’s mountains, impacting travel but boosting snowpack.
DENVER — For those of you who have been hoping for Colorado mountain snowfall, your wish is about to be granted, however it could hamper high country travel over the next few days.
The biggest snowstorm so far this season is set to slam into the mountains, starting Friday and lasting until Sunday morning.
Winter weather in mountains
The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings for most of Colorado’s central and northern mountains, where as much as two feet of snow could fall this weekend.
The snow starts up on Friday morning, with a few snow showers generally along and north of the Interstate 70 corridor. The snow picks up later on Friday night into Saturday morning, with the heaviest snow on Saturday morning before tapering off on Saturday night into early Sunday.
One to two feet of snow will be likely from I-70 on north, providing a needed boost to our paltry snowpack in the high country. Wind will also be a big story in the mountains, with 50-60 mph gusts kicking up on Friday and Saturday. Those will back off by Sunday.
Wind in Denver
Denver will get some wind and a stray rain or snow shower on Saturday, but it won’t be much if we see any rain or snow.
The story in the metro area will be the wind, which could whip up to 40 mph on Saturday before relaxing for Sunday. The foothills could see gusts in the 60 mph range on Friday night and Saturday.
