A Maui police officer died Friday night after she was shot while responding to a call at the Pā’ia Sugar Mill.
Police have not released the officer’s name to allow time for the notification of the officer’s next of kin.
“Our department is heartbroken,” Maui Police Chief John Pelletier said in a statement. “We have lost one of our finest — an officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community. She was a hero, and we will ensure she is honored with the reverence she deserves. Our deepest condolences go out to her family, loved ones, and fellow officers during this time of profound loss.”
According to the police department, the officer was responding to a terroristic threatening call at 8:26 p.m. Friday at the Pā’ia Sugar Mill off Baldwin Avenue.
The caller had reported that an unknown person had trespassed on the property and fired a weapon at them.
Police said responding officers encountered an armed suspect who fired on the officer. Police said officers returned fire and struck the suspect in the lower body.
The suspect was taken into custody and is receiving medical treatment.
