DETROIT — The No. 20-ranked Wayne State University men’s tennis program (15-7) received a bid to the NCAA Tournament on Monday night as the No. 3 seed in the Midwest Regional Tournament. The tournament will be hosted by both Grand Valley State University and the University of Indianapolis.
This year’s selection marks the 15th time the WSU men’s tennis team has been selected to the tournament and ninth under the guidance of head coach Bryan Morrow.
The Green and Gold will face #30-Ferris State University on Friday, May 9 in Indianapolis. The winner of that match will meet the victor of the contest between #17-UIndy and #27-Purdue University Northwest on Saturday, May 10.
Eight teams will compete in this year’s Midwest Regional as Grand Valley State (#1), UIndy (#2), Wayne State (#3), Rockhurst (#4), Drury (#5), Ferris State (#6), Purdue Northwest (#7), and Tiffin (#8) and all earned bids into the tournament.
Following the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament, the Warriors have a 15-7 record that includes an 11-3 mark within the midwest region. Wayne State battled to the GLIAC Tournament Championship but was bested 4-0 by GVSU on April 27.
WSU has been ranked in each iteration of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) National Ranking this season and appear as the No. 20-ranked squad currently. Individually, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) is the No. 49-ranked player in singles competition while the duo of Drenth and George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) is ranked 31st in doubles.
In NCAA Championship action, WSU has an all-time record of 18-14 that includes a 3-1 performance during last year’s campaign that saw Wayne State advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals after prevailing over Tiffin, Grand Valley State, and Washburn. This marks the fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for the Warriors along with the sixth time in the last seven tournaments (2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025).
A total of 48 teams received bids to the NCAA Tournament with 15 of those squads earning an automatic bid after winning their respective conference tournaments.
The winner of the 16 regional sections will advance to the NCAA Championship Round of 16, with the men’s side scheduled for Tuesday, May 20, through Saturday, May 24, at Salando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
