SALT LAKE CITY — Mexican food, including chocolate, will be the focus of a festival organized by the Mexican Consulate and Artes de Mexico en Utah.
The Mexican Food Festival is set for Saturday, Aug. 2, and will go from 4-9 p.m. at the Mexican Civic Center, 155 S. 600 West in Salt Lake City. The aim of the free event is to showcase the varied food offerings from around the country.
“The purpose is to celebrate and share a little of the wealth and variety of Mexican food with Utah,” said Eduardo Baca, the consul general of the Mexican Consulate here. Traditional Mexican cuisine, he noted, is on UNESCO’s representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Included in the varied activities will be a workshop on how to make traditional chocolate and another, Baca said, on how to make corn tortillas at home. Moreover, food trucks, restaurants and traditional Mexican cooks will be offering food for sale while traditional dance and music groups provide entertainment.
“It’s an important opportunity to celebrate not only Mexican food and gastronomy, famous throughout the world, but also to celebrate the links between Mexico and Utah. Food unites the communities,” Baca said.
The chocolate workshop, with limited space, will go from 6-8 p.m., according to Artes de Mexico en Utah, a cultural organization.
“Come, have fun and learn how chocolate is made with Esmeralda and Rocío, two incredible Zoque Indigenous women who will share their knowledge and traditions,” reads a flier for the event.
