Miami-Dade Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez announced Monday that he revoked the licenses of 20 businesses suspected of engaging in trade with the Cuban regime.
Fernandez announced the crackdown in a news release, reinforcing that according to county code, the tax collector’s office is authorized to revoke or refuse to renew the local business tax of any business with ties to Cuba in violation of federal law.
“As a Cuban emigrant, I know firsthand the suffering inflicted by the Cuban communist regime. That regime has been, is, and will continue to be a threat to the national security of the United States, and Miami-Dade County will not be used as a platform to finance or sustain it,” Fernandez said.
Back in October, Fernandez said his office contacted 75 businesses suspected of engaging in commerce with Cuba and requested that they provide documentation proving otherwise. Forty-eight businesses responded with the documentation, and the remaining were sent a second notice.
The following businesses did not provide the tax collector’s office with any further response and, effective immediately, cannot legally operate in Miami-Dade County, Fernandez said.

“In the coming weeks, more businesses will be notified, and those that do not comply with the requirements will have their Local Business Tax revoked. This is just the beginning,” Fernandez said. “Our investigations will continue, and my office will not hesitate to take further action where the law requires it. We will act with firmness, responsibility, and unwavering respect for the rule of law.”
