The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) commends Health Director-General Dr Mahathar Wahab and the Ministry of Health (MOH) for issuing a clear statement on the scope of practice in vaccine administration.
This clarification comes at an important time to reaffirm that vaccination is a clinical procedure that must be performed by qualified and registered medical professionals in accordance with existing laws — ensuring patient safety and maintaining public trust.
MMA appreciates the leadership and decisiveness shown by MOH in providing this clarity, consistent with the concerns that MMA and many healthcare professionals have previously expressed regarding the need to uphold patient safety and professional standards.
In a health care environment that is increasingly diverse and market-driven, MOH’s role in maintaining clear professional boundaries is crucial. This leadership ensures that public health priorities and patient safety remain at the centre of care, even as the healthcare sector continues to evolve and innovate.
MMA fully supports MOH’s continued efforts to safeguard clinical governance, uphold ethical practice, and ensure that vaccination services in Malaysia remain safe, regulated, and patient-centred.
We encourage all health care providers — across both the public and private sectors — to collaborate responsibly within their professional scopes to strengthen Malaysia’s immunisation coverage.
This statement was issued by MMA president Dr R. Arasu.
