MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving team earned a bronze medal and set three program records on the first night of the 2025 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships on Tuesday at Weyerhaeuser Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington.
The diving team comprised of freshman Levi Hellmann, sophomore Owen Recker and junior Christian Torres earned West Virginia’s first medal after placing third in the men’s team diving event. The trio also set a program record with a final score of 336.80.
In the final swimming event of the evening, redshirt senior Danny Berlitz set a program record with his 200-yard split during the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay. Berlitz touched the wall at 1:34.93, besting his program record of 1:35.55 from the 2024 conference championship.
Along with Berlitz, the relay team comprised of freshman Nick Lugo, redshirt sophomore Christian Simpson and senior Roanoke Shirk also set a program record with a final time of 6:24.88.
That time beat the record (6:26.02) set at last year’s conference championship by over a second.
In the women’s 800 free relay, sophomore Maddie Smutny’s 200-yard split was the 10th fastest in program history as she touched the wall at 1:48.59. The relay team ultimately placed eighth with a final time of 7:17.18.
In the diving well, junior Abigail Sullivan, redshirt junior Amari Brown-Swint and senior Sarah Krusinski placed eighth in the team diving event with a final score of 238.60.
