With the Celtics playing in the NBA Finals for the second time in three seasons, Boston stands to benefit economically. Boston won Game 1 and is pursuing an unprecedented 18th NBA title. Game 2 will be played on Sunday night. Each game of the series can bring an estimated $6 million to the city, Boston Chief of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Segun Idowu said during an interview for Sunday’s episode of On The Record. Citing estimates from Meet Boston, Idowu said much of the economic impacts will be spread across the travel and hospitality industries. “It’s a great way to kick off the season,” Idowu said. “Annually, we see about 5 million visitors throughout the summer.” Idowu also suggested that the high-profile stage of the NBA’s championship series could also have benefits down the road. “These are folks that are coming here for the game but they will come back later on because they see what Boston has to offer,” Idowu said. Games 1 and 2 of the series are being played at TD Garden. Games 3 and 4 will be played in Dallas, but the venue will host sold-out watch parties for those games.”That alone is also going to drive economic impact for the area,” Idowu told OTR. Canal Street will also be turned into a pedestrian zone during games. The best-of-7 series will return to Boston for Games 5 and 7, if necessary.
