STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A new school has been proposed to add over 750 seats for students on Staten Island.
The new facility, serving students in pre-K through eighth-grade, is proposed to bring about 754 seats to Great Kills, with seats allocated for special education.
Here’s what we know so far.
What is the new school?
The combined elementary and intermediate school is currently just a proposal by the New York City School Construction Authority, on behalf of the city Department of Education.
The city was collecting comments on the proposed site until the end of June 2025. The proposed school must be approved before design and construction may begin.
Where will it be located?
The SCA has proposed to acquire an over 96,000-square-foot site at the corner of Abingdon and East Reading avenues.
It is bounded by East Perkiomen Avenue to the north, East Reading Avenue to the south, Abingdon Avenue to the east, and Armstrong Avenue to the west.
The proposed site consists of 18 privately owned vacant lots. The site is currently an empty grassy lot surrounded by residential homes.

When would it open to students?
The proposal has a slated opening for students by the 2030-2031 school year.
Why is a new school being proposed?
The proposed school comes as the city works to add more school seats to meet class size requirements per state law and meet demand as enrollment grows on Staten Island.
The city expects Staten Island to have over 43,150 students in elementary and middle school by 2030 — an increase of 2,417 students compared to current enrollment numbers in the borough.
Assuming projected enrollment increases by 2030, this new school would reduce over-utilization of nearby schools like PS 42 in Eltingville, PS 32 in Great Kills, and Barnes Intermediate School (I.S. 24), also in Great Kills.
