BOSTON— In response to persistent disparities in opportunity, access, and health across underrepresented communities, a new nonprofit organization, DEI Boston Charities Fund, has officially launched in Boston.
Founded by community advocate and entrepreneur Upendra Mishra, the organization is dedicated to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion by empowering Hispanic, African American, Asian, women, and immigrant populations through comprehensive, community-centered programs.
“Our mission is rooted in a deep belief that access to knowledge, mentorship, and wellness should not depend on your race, gender, or where you were born,” said Mr. Mishra, founder of DEI Boston. “We are building a platform where individuals from historically marginalized groups can gain the skills, support, and opportunities they need to thrive—and lead.”
Addressing a Critical Need
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, minority-owned businesses continue to face systemic barriers to funding and mentorship, with Black entrepreneurs receiving less than 1.2% of venture capital funding in the U.S. (Crunchbase, 2023). Similarly, Latino entrepreneurs represent nearly 20% of the U.S. population but receive just 2% of small business loans (Stanford Latino Entrepreneurship Initiative, 2023). Meanwhile, women—especially women of color—still face wage gaps, underrepresentation in leadership roles, and limited access to wellness resources.
“Boston is one of the most diverse and dynamic cities in the country, yet far too many of our neighbors still lack access to basic opportunities,” said Mr. Mishra. “DEI Boston Charities Fund is here to close those gaps—through culturally responsive programs in education, entrepreneurship, leadership development, and health.”
A Holistic Approach to Empowerment
DEI Boston’s core programs will include:
-
Educational Workshops: Free and low-cost classes focused on financial literacy, career readiness, and digital skills.
-
Entrepreneurship Support: Mentoring, business planning resources, and startup guidance for aspiring entrepreneurs.
-
Health & Wellness Initiatives: Accessible programs promoting nutrition, mental health, and physical well-being.
-
Leadership Development: Equipping future community leaders with tools for civic engagement and professional success.
The organization is currently building partnerships with local schools, businesses, and healthcare providers to maximize impact across Greater Boston. The long-term goal: to serve as a model for inclusive community development nationwide.
