Major League Baseball’s most storied franchise is back in the World Series for the first time in 15 years.
The New York Yankees will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 World Series beginning Friday, and it will be a chance for the Bronx Bombers to add to what is already a record number of championships. Nobody in MLB history has appeared in or won the World Series more than the Yankees, starting with their first championship in 1923. They’ve won a World Series in every decade during that time except the 1980s and 2010s.
Now comes a chance to bring a World Series title to New York with a new generation of players. The Yankees and Dodgers are about to get underway in another chapter of one of baseball’s great rivalries. It’s a perfect time to look back at what’s happened in the past.
Here’s a look at the Yankees’ World Series history, including how many championships the franchise has won and their previous World Series matchups against the Dodgers:

New York Yankees World Series: How many have they won?
The New York Yankees have won an MLB-record 27 World Series titles over a span of more than 100 years since the franchise’s first championship back in 1923. They’ve won a World Series in every decade during that time except the 1980s and 2010s, including two four-peats (1936-39 and 1950-53).
The Yankees are also the last MLB team to have won consecutive World Series title (1998-2000). New York’s most recent World Series win — and their most recent World Series appearance — came in 2009.
Yankees vs. Dodgers World Series history
The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers will meet for the 12th time in the World Series, the most frequent Fall Classic matchup in MLB history. The two franchises were once both located in New York and played in the World Series eight times before the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn in 1958, including six meetings between 1947 and 1956.
The Dodgers won the title when they last played the Yankees in the World Series in 1981, but New York holds an 8-3 advantage all-time over the Dodgers in the Fall Classic.
