The Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach search continues as a handful of names seem to pull away from the pack.
The Steelers have had in-person interviews with Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, and former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula and pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase both remain in the mix, but NFL rules state the Steelers cannot interview them again until after the NFC Championship Game.
McCarthy’s name, though, has conjured up debates. On one hand, he is a proven head coach with a Super Bowl win and a history of winning with two blue blood franchises. On the other, he is 62 and Pittsburgh tends to hire young in hopes of keeping that coach for the long-term.
ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky shared his thoughts on the matter, saying the Steelers hiring McCarthy in hopes of bringing Aaron Rodgers back in 2026 would be a big mistake.
“Hiring Mike McCarthy and bringing Aaron Rodgers back would be the worst decision Pittsburgh could make,” Orlovsky said on Get Up. “And that’s not an indictment on each of them or either of them individually. Mike McCarthy is a really good coach. Obviously, Aaron is one of the all-time greats. To hire Mike McCarthy and bring Aaron back is going to place you quite literally in the same position you’re in right now in January of 2027.”
Whomever the Steelers’ next head coach is will take on an older roster, and changes to that roster will almost certainly follow.
