RALEIGH, N.C. — The field of Republican candidates for North Carolina’s U.S. Senate seat is getting smaller.
Andy Nilsson, a football coach in Winston-Salem, announced Friday that he is suspending his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat up for election next year. The seat is currently held by U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, who’s not seeking reelection.
In a letter to supporters, Nilsson said President Donald Trump’s endorsement of another senate candidate — former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley — played a “central role” in his decision.
Whatley launched his campaign eight days ago and is viewed by many political analysts as the frontrunner for the GOP nomination.
