NEW YORK (WABC) — Election analysts say Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s win signals a generational change – a majority of younger, educated people voted for him. He also picked up some new support in areas that were skewing for President Donald Trump last year.
A record number of people voted in the mayoral election, more than 2 million residents. How many of those voters cast their ballots has changed since the presidential election.
In 2024, President Trump caused more of New York City to go red in areas that have been democratic strongholds.
As for the mayoral election, while Cuomo did well in areas like Staten Island, Crown Heights and the Upper East Side, Mamdani had big wins in most other areas.
“Some of of the areas that have been trending towards Trump went for Mamdani,” said Political Science Professor John Mollenkopf, who helps map the results for the CUNY Graduate Center and Center for Urban Research. “This is a real breakthrough for the rising immigrant communities of New York City.”
He said more Latinos, especially in Washington Heights, who were skewing toward the President last year, voted for Mamdani.
“But there are other areas that were drifting toward Trump where Mamdani didn’t do well, in particular the Chinese neighborhoods of New York City,” said Mollenkopf.
In addition, the 2024 Presidential voting map and the 2025 NYC Mayoral map look very similar in the fact that a majority of those who voted for President Trump voted for Andrew Cuomo, and a majority of those who voted for Kamala Harris voted for Zohran Mamdani.
“They’re very traditional patterns in that sense,” said Mollenkopf.
He attributes much of Mamdani’s success to his message on the economy, making the cost of living more affordable.
“Across the country you saw this same blue wave result,” said Micah Rasmussen, director of the Rebovich Institute at Rider University.
The message on the economy is one some political experts said Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill also used to connect with voters in New Jersey.
Jack Ciattarelli lost five of the counties that Trump won in 2024.
“I think voters need to hear that she understood that, she was ready to roll up her sleeves and do something about it, now she’s got to deliver,” said Rasmussen.
