OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – El Museo Latino reopened its doors Wednesday following a period of renovations, marking the return of what community members describe as a cultural anchor in South Omaha.
Mayor John Ewing proclaimed the day El Museo Latino Day at the opening ceremony.
“We know the contributions that all groups have made to the greatness of this country,” Ewing said. “So, I’m really excited that they will get to tell that story themselves, not someone else telling that story for them.”
El Museo Latino is the first Latino art and history museum in the Midwest. Its collections span from pre-Columbian artifacts to contemporary works.
The renovations included updates to the museum’s galleries, designed to better showcase exhibits and attract a new generation of visitors.
Jorge Ernesto Espejel, Consul of Mexico, also spoke at the reopening.
“It is so important for all the Latino community,” Espejel said. “It’s a safe place that they can share culture, history, and traditions. We are so happy it is reopen once again.”
Visitors can now access both permanent collections and new exhibits, including photography and textile displays highlighting Latin American culture.
