The PGA Tour on Thursday informed its membership that it is “monitoring” the fires occurring in L.A. County ahead of the upcoming Genesis Invitational next month. The signature event hosted by Tiger Woods is scheduled to be held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. beginning on Feb. 13. It is located in the “mandatory evacuation zone” implemented earlier this week. Altadena Golf Course, which is located to the northeast in the city of Pasadena, confirmed on social media that the club had been “destroyed in the blaze.” Riviera Country Club was selected as host venue to the men’s and women’s golf at LA28. It will also host the 2026 U.S. Women’s Open and the 2031 U.S. Open (GOLFWEEK, 1/9).
PGA Tour player Sahith Theegala, the 13th-ranked player in the world, is “donating toward relief efforts.” He is “contributing $100 for every birdie and $250 for every eagle” he makes this week at the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club. Theegala was born in Orange, Calif., and played at Pepperdine in L. A. (GOLFWEEK, 1/9).
Meanwhile, the Spurs, who are set to play against the Lakers in L.A. on Saturday, “changed hotels” on Thursday “for ‘precautionary safety reasons'” as wildfires encroach on the hills outside Santa Monica. The Spurs reached Santa Monica “around 4 a.m. Thursday after flying” into L.A. on Wednesday, and “checked into their team hotel” but relocated to a downtown hotel “more than 30 miles away” from the wildfires that devastated areas north of Santa Monica (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 1/9).
