Ohio Wesleyan Student Completes HR Internship at Global Company’s Texas Headquarters
Name: Lily Delahoussaye ’27
Hometown: Sugar Land, Texas
High School: Logos Preparatory Academy
Major: Business Administration: Management Concentration and Psychology
OWU Connection Experience: Summer internship working on the Global Human Resources Compliance and Governance Team at Baker Hughes, a global energy company headquartered in Houston, Texas, and London, England
“There are two major subsets to Baker Hughes,” Delahoussaye says, “Oilfield Services and Equipment (OFSE) and Industrial and Energy Technology (IET). I was able to work as part of headquarters, which assisted both sections. My team had three portfolios: Policy Harmonization, Audit, and Mergers & Acquisitions. I was mainly focused on the Policy Harmonization piece, but learned about all three. Baker Hughes has over 1,000 policies, and I had the opportunity to explore the entire timeline from creation, to upload, and even upkeep.”
Why This Experience?
“I have had an interest in Human Resources since I set foot on Ohio Wesleyan’s campus. I knew this was a field I wanted to pursue, and OWU has helped me through every step of the process.
“My freshman year, I found a group of students who, like me, had an interest in pursuing a career in HR. We grouped together and founded Ohio Wesleyan’s Human Resources Club, of which I am now the president.
“Through my experience with the HR Club, I have been able to see that Human Resources is a wide field with many different subsections. I was excited for the opportunity to dive deeper into the HR policy subspeciality. I also wanted to gain hands-on experience utilizing the skills Ohio Wesleyan taught me through my coursework and extracurriculars.”
Favorite Moments
“My favorite wasn’t one little thing, but it was the connections and people I was able to meet over the course of my internship. Because Baker Hughes is a global company, I was working with people from all over the world on a daily basis.
“While a majority of the small team was based in Houston, I also communicated consistently with other team members based in Hungary, Scotland, and even Cincinnati, Ohio. The people I met were so knowledgeable in their respective fields and were so willing to impart the skills they had learned to me. …
“My internship was hybrid working. I went into the office once a month to connect with the Houston-based team, but for the most part I worked remotely. … Since the team is scattered all over the world, being able to connect while being so far apart was nice.”
By far the most valuable lesson I learned during my internship was a further understanding of what I wanted to do as a career.
Lessons Learned
“Throughout my time at OWU, I have taken numerous classes surrounding Human Resources, including the class Strategic Human Resource Management. During the class, we learned many concepts that I was able to better understand seeing them first-hand in the workplace.
“On top of learning how to implement the HR skills, I was also able to see what would be required of me as a professional in the workforce, including how to use numerous HR systems such as MySupport and ServiceNOW.
“By far the most valuable lesson I learned during my internship was a further understanding of what I wanted to do as a career.”
HR Club & OWU Connections
“Because she is an advisor for my club, I have spent a lot of time with Carolyn Lammert, the business and economics career catalyst (in the Career Connection office). Having been in the HR field previously, she has been a great resource for me regarding the application and interview process.
“I have been able to get to know many OWU alumni through the HR Club. Alumni like Evelyn Walter ’91 (Next Up Leadership Group) and Imogene Johnson ’80 (OWU’s HR director) have been great resources when it comes to understanding the field.”
Campus Involvements
“I am very involved on campus! I am a Woltemade Economics and Business Fellow, president and founder of the Human Resources Club, a sister of Delta Zeta, a member of the cheer team, and an event intern for the Admission Office.”
Why Ohio Wesleyan?
“I chose to attend Ohio Wesleyan because of the community. I found OWU from the book, ‘Colleges that Change Lives.’ Being from Texas, I was terrified about the cold, but the community has been so warm and welcoming.”
Plans After Graduation
“I have plans to pursue a career in Human Resources and move back to Houston. I am hoping to go to law school and focus on employment and policy law. I have been in regular communication with career catalysts who are giving me resources in every aspect of my future journey.”
