City officials have released plans showing how they plan to rebuild the Father Manuel Roman Community Center in a Southside neighborhood as part of a review process.
The Historic and Design Review Commission issued a conceptual approval for a new 11,900-square foot building at Villa Coronado Park, after the original community center was closed in October 2023 due to structural issues.
Nick Olivier, a public relations manager for the city’s Public Works Department, said construction could begin in fall 2025 after city staff prepares for permitting and finalize other documentation.
The City of San Antonio committed $12 million to replacing the building in June 2024.
The new community center will feature a gymnasium with a basketball court, classroom spaces, a kitchenette, storage, restrooms and maintenance areas in the far Southside park.
According to city documents, the new building will be built around the site of the previous building to minimize disturbances to the park.
There will also be a public art component, after demolition of the previous building resulted in the removal of a well-known mural on the building’s east facade.

According to city documents, designers will collaborate with city and community stakeholders to include a new public art component honoring Father Manuel Roman, the community center’s namesake.
Kenwood Park plans move forward
Plans for a community and senior center at Kenwood Park on Dora Street and Belknap Place were also submitted for the Historic and Design Review Commission’s Wednesday meeting.
The 8,880-square foot building would also replace a previous community center and include classrooms, offices, a dining area and multi-purpose rooms.
