MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — A beloved mural on Milwaukee’s south side is getting a second life.
Renowned local artist Reynaldo Hernandez is restoring an iconic mural he originally painted in 1989 on the exterior of the United Community Center in Walker’s Point.
The “Landmarks Mural” is a vibrant piece that reflects Hispanic culture, identity, and tradition — themes that have defined Hernandez’s work.
Born on Milwaukee’s south side to a Mexican father and a Black mother, Hernandez says his Latin heritage is at the heart of his art.
Now, decades later, he’s breathing new life into the mural with help from UCC students and their children, passing down both technique and tradition.
“So, it’s a privilege for me to retouch it, cause then it will last longer,” Hernandez said. “So now my kids grew up, they helped paint on this, and now their children are artists, so we’re passing it on.”
With each brushstroke, Hernandez hopes to inspire pride, preserve cultural identity, and remind future generations of the beauty of diversity.
