Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen and women should receive pay during the shutdown after the Trump administration announced it would reallocate funds to ensure military members continue to receive a paycheck.
President Donald Trump ordered Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to find funds for military paychecks in a Saturday Truth Social post. The Pentagon identified about $8 billion in unobligated research development testing and evaluation funds from Fiscal Year 2025 that will be used for the mid-month check slated for Oct. 15 if the government shutdown does not end before Wednesday, a Pentagon spokesperson said Tuesday.
It is not clear if the funds will also help cover paychecks for the end of the month if the government shutdown continues.
While the Pentagon is attributing the money to RDTE funds, the treasury secretary told Fox Business Network that the government is furloughing workers in other government sectors to be able to pay military members, Reuters reported.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem did not specify where DHS found the funds to continue paying guardsmen and women when she announced on social media site X that they would receive a mid-month paycheck.
“Thanks to President Trump’s leadership and the One Big Beautiful Bill, the brave men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard will not miss a paycheck this week as they continue to carry out their critical homeland security and military missions,” Noem wrote in her post.
Coast Guard members will receive the mid-month check between Oct. 15-17, the Coast Guard announced Monday.
