SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Major roads surrounding the Temple Square in Salt Lake will close for several months after the Salt Lake City Council unanimously granted a request from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Starting in March 2027, North Temple between Main Street and West Temple, as well as West Temple between North Temple and South Temple, were scheduled to be closed completely to traffic.

The Temple streets were also scheduled to experience partial lane closures between Main Street and West Temple, 200 West and West Temple, and 200 North and North Temple.
The City Council approved the closures as Salt Lake prepares for an influx of visitors during a planned open house event for the historic Salt Lake Temple.
Church President Russell M. Nelson announced the open house shortly before his passing to celebrate the completion of the temple’s renovation project, which started in December 2019. During the open house, members of the public – both church members and non-church members alike – will get a rare opportunity to get a tour of the Salt Lake landmark.

Once the open house ends, the Temple will only be open to church members with active temple recommends.
City staff said these road closures would help manage large crowds, reduce traffic congestion, and allow for safety features such as barricades, signs, and emergency access.
“I know what a huge ask this is and how disruptive this potentially is,” said District 3 Councilmember Chris Wharton. He later added, “We’ve got a year to prepare for this. I’m committed to doing my best to make sure that we minimize those inconveniences.”
The closures are anticipated to last until October 2027.
