SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Plaza Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City will cease operations on Nov. 1, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced on Tuesday.
It said the hotel is closing due to the rising costs to maintain, operate and update it. It was built in the early 1970s.
Initially, the church plans to use the location for parking during the Salt Lake Temple open house beginning in April 2027, but a long-term use has not yet been determined.
The hotel is currently owned by Property Reserve, the real estate investment arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Tuesday’s announcement said that after it closes, ownership will be transferred to the church, and demolition will begin.
The demolition of the hotel and its parking garage will be done in a floor-by-floor manner, allowing recyclable materials to be preserved.
The church said the parking area will have landscaping complementing Temple Square and the FamilySearch library during the temple open house.
The church said there will still be 28 hotels and 7,421 hotel rooms within a 1-mile radius of Downtown Salt Lake City after the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel is demolished.
According to its website, the Plaza Hotel has 150 rooms.
Before the closure of the hotel, Property Reserve said it would provide financial and job-search support to hotel employees.
