SGMC Health is advancing orthopedic surgical care in South Georgia with the utilization of IntelliJoint® HIP, an advanced technology used during hip replacement surgery by orthopedic surgeon Anthony D’Abarno, DO.
Hip replacement surgery is one of the most common joint procedures performed in the United States, and hospitals nationwide are increasingly using technology to support greater accuracy during surgery.
IntelliJoint HIP is used during surgery to provide real‑time information that helps surgeons more accurately position the new hip joint. This allows adjustments to be made while the procedure is underway, based on each patient’s body, rather than relying only on visual judgment, which can improve balance, comfort, and movement after surgery.
“Small differences during surgery can have a big impact on how a patient feels afterward,” said Dr. D’Abarno. “This technology gives us immediate feedback during the procedure, helping improve accuracy and consistency while the patient is still on the operating table.”
Accurate placement of hip replacement components is important for reducing common concerns such as one leg feeling longer than the other, instability in the hip joint, or the need for additional surgery in the future.
Unlike some surgical systems, IntelliJoint HIP does not require extra imaging before surgery and can be used with a wide range of hip replacement implants and surgical techniques. It may be used for first‑time hip replacement surgeries and, in some cases, follow‑up procedures.
