It’s no secret that the Big 12 Conference is known for having some of the nation’s best quarterbacks. Still, multiple league members have made strides this year, exceeding their expectations further.
Five such quarterbacks showed up in a recent list from 247Sports’ Clint Brewster ranking the Top 20 quarterbacks in the nation following Week 8.
The five quarterbacks listed include Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Kansas State’s Avery Johnson, Baylor’s Sawyer Robertson, Cincinnati’s Brendan Sorsby, and Iowa State’s Rocco Becht. Sanders headlined the league on the list at No. 4, followed by Johnson at No. 8, Robertson at No. 10, Sorsby at No. 14, and Becht at No. 16.
“Shedeur Sanders and Colorado mopped up Arizona 34-7 on Saturday,” Brewster said. “Sanders completed 69.7% of his throws but did throw two interceptions, which is why he’s not higher on this list. Still, Sanders has had a magnificent season and has Colorado one win away from a bowl birth. Colorado hosts Cincinnati next.”
“Avery Johnson has had a nice streak of eight touchdown passes with two interceptions since the Sept. 21 loss to BYU, the Wildcats one L of the season,” Brewster wrote. “Johnson has thrown the football with more confidence and has been quicker with his progressions. On Saturday, he connected for three scores through the air and no picks while registering a 65.5% completion rate. The 6-1 Wildcats play Kansas this week.”
“Baylor QB Sawyer Robertson is very deserving of a top 10 spot after his official coming out party on Saturday in a blowout win over Texas Tech,” said Brewster. “Robertson threw five touchdowns and completed 65.6% of his throws. Robertson is a junior signal caller and a transfer from Mississippi State who has struggled in previous seasons. He might have found his stride at Baylor. Oklahoma State comes into town this week.”
With Sorsby and Becht appearing outside of the Top 10, neither received write-ups in the article. Regardless, both quarterbacks have been impressive this fall. Sorsby has been one of the year’s biggest surprises, with Cincinnati well within striking distance of a trip to Arlington for the Big 12 Championship. Becht has performed admirably as well under center for the Cyclones with Iowa State sitting at a perfect 7-0 record.
