Before Brian Schottenheimer was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, it was long speculated that owner Jerry Jones was targeting Colorado head coach Deion Sanders to replace the recently fired Mike McCarthy.
Jones and Sanders have a history together — the latter played for Jones’ Cowboys from 1995 to 1999, earning four All-Pro selections, four Pro Bowl selections, and winning one Super Bowl.
And while Jones and Sanders did discuss the Cowboys’ then-vacant head-coaching position, Sanders ultimately inked a new five-year, $54 million contract extension with Colorado, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football.
It’s been debated how close Sanders actually came to accepting the Cowboys’ job, given he’s been on the record stating he prefers to coach college kids over grown men, but some fans and analysts still believe there’s a chance Sanders could ultimately end up coaching in the NFL before his career is over.

However, his son Shilo Sanders, a current NFL free agent and former member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, recently addressed whether that was a realistic future possibility.
“Hope your dad coaches in the NFL,” one fan told Shilo during a recent Twitch stream.
“That’s probably not going to happen,” Shilo responded, seemingly pouring cold water on any future speculation that Deion could end up leaving the college ranks for a higher paycheck in the NFL.

However, Deion has stated before that there is one way he would consider taking a coaching job in the NFL.
“The only way I would consider is to coach my sons — not son, sons,” Deion stated earlier this year during an appearance on “Good Morning America.” “[The door isn’t closed but] I love Colorado. I love my Buffaloes, I love everything that we’re building.”
Colorado is currently 3-4 this season — Deion’s second in Boulder — and the team is coming off a 24-17 upset win over No. 22 Iowa State, arguably its biggest win since “Coach Prime” took over the program.
