With inflation, competition from online shopping and a volatile economy pinching pockets, it’s a gulp-worthy endeavor for any small business owner to sign a downtown lease.
But Metuchen, which was recognized as the 2023 Great American Main Street of the Year, is trying to make it easier.
Spark, which will host rotating businesses, will launch at 450 Main St. — the former home of FK Living — on Friday, May 30.
The 150-square-foot space will offer short-term opportunities for both emerging and established creatives to showcase their works.
The inaugural businesses at Spark will include an inclusive swimsuit design brand based in Asbury Park; a custom embroidery artist from Westfield; and a designer denim boutique based in Maplewood. Businesses can apply for a spot at downtownmetuchen.org/spark/.
The first of its kind in New Jersey downtowns, Spark was created by the Metuchen Downtown Alliance and was inspired by existing concepts in New York City and Europe.
“In times like these, we need to think outside the box in how we as downtown managers actively foster and strengthen our entrepreneurial ecosystems,” said Natalie Pineiro, executive director of Downtown New Jersey.
“This innovative micro-storefront incubator program not only serves as a launchpad for new businesses, introducing fresh ideas and energy to the district, but also equips entrepreneurs with essential operational strategies to ensure their long-term success,” she continued. “We applaud Downtown Metuchen for their visionary approach and commitment to business development.”
