A city timeline for a Spurs-anchored downtown sports and entertainment district shows construction of a new arena “beginning in the second quarter of 2026 and wrapping up by mid-2028,” four years before the team’s lease Bexar County for the Frost Bank Center expires on Sept. 30, 2032, according to Molly Smith of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. The city’s timeline for a new Spurs home court “likely hinges on whether the county agrees to help pay for it with taxes on visitors.” Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai said that it is “not a guarantee” that happens, even though City of San Antonio Assistant City Manager Lori Houston “described the tax the county levies on hotels and rental cars as a potential funding source.” Sakai wants to “ensure that city and county officials have the political will — and financing — to finally make the Frost Bank Center and its grounds an economic engine for the East Side.” Sakai said that he and state Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins are “currently appointing community members to a citizen’s advisory committee that will help devise a plan for how to re-purpose the Frost Bank Center, the neighboring county-owned Freeman Coliseum and Exposition Hall and the expansive parking lots surrounding these facilities.” According to the agreement, if the Spurs leave the facility before Sept. 30, 2028, they “would owe” the county $100M. The payment “drops by” $6M after every year (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 12/5).
