Can the Liberty become back to back champions?
USAT’s Meghan Hall shares her thoughts on whether or not the Liberty can make another run to the WNBA finals and be back to back champs.
Sports Seriously
The 2025 WNBA season is approaching, with the New York Liberty hosting the Connecticut Sun at the Barclays Center in one of the final preseason games for both teams.
The 2024 season couldn’t have gone much better for the Liberty, who assembled a “superteam” and brought home the franchise’s first championship. It wasn’t a fluke, either: New York finished atop the regular-season standings with a 32-8 record. The Liberty lost Courtney Vandersloot in free agency this winter, but replaced her in March in a trade with Connecticut, landing Natasha Cloud.
Cloud never actually played for the Sun, who are in the midst of a complete rebuild. Brionna Jones and DeWanna Bonner departed in free agency, while franchise cornerstone Alyssa Thomas was traded to the Phoenix Mercury. But former WNBA MVP Tina Charles and Diamond DeShields signed one-year deals with the Sun, while first-round picks Aneesah Morrow and Saniya Rivers figure to be building blocks for years to come.
