Syracuse University honored the late Lawrence Moten with a special ceremony during Saturday’s game against Notre Dame.
“He knew how to play,” said former Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim during the ceremony. “He knew how to be a great teammate. He knew how to be great with his family. He knew how to be great with Syracuse basketball.”
Moten’s family was presented with a replica of the head coaches’ chair. On the chair is a plaque inscribed with a quote from Moten.
Moten is Syracuse basketball’s all-time leading scorer. He played four years at Syracuse from 1991-95, scoring a total of 2,334 points in 121 games for the Orange. Moten averaged 19.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists a game.
His number 21 jersey was retired during a ceremony in 2018, making him one of a select few Syracuse players to have their jersey hung in the Dome’s rafters.
He passed away on Sept. 30, 2025, at age 53.
