Target has opened a new 50,000-square-foot store in Miami’s Overtown, marking a new era of retail access in the heart of the historic neighborhood.
The new store is located at Sawyer’s Walk (Block 55), a 1.5 million-square-foot mixed-use development currently underway at 249 NW Sixth St. The 578-unit apartment building primarily serves low-income seniors in the area.
The new Target marks the first to be built in Miami’s downtown area. Following the addition of the Target, Sawyer’s Walk will soon also include a new Burlington (38,000 square feet), an Aldi (25,000 square feet), a Five Below (10,000 square feet) and a Ross Dress for Less (26,000 square feet).
Designed by Arquitectonica, Sawyer’s Walk also includes a 25,000-square-foot public plaza and 130,000 square feet of office space that will anchor MSC Cruises’ new North American headquarters. It also features an outdoor seating area, a children’s playground and a dog park, as well as 1,000 parking spaces and access to public transit options like the Metrorail, Metromover, and Brightline.
SG Holdings — which consists of Swerdlow Group, SJM Partners, and Alben Duffie — constructed the 3.4-acre development that broke ground in June 2021. The public-private partnership was made possible through a collaboration with the City of Miami’s Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency, Miami-Dade County’s Department of Public Housing and Community Development, County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, City of Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, City of Miami Commissioner and Chairwoman Christine King and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Keon Hardemon.
