The sports bar opened in 2011 and was popular among college students and young adults in the neighborhood.
Tavern in the Square in Allston, a sports bar popular with college students and young adults that make up the Boston neighborhood, quietly closed this week.
The bar announced on Instagram that it shut its doors for good as of Monday, May 20.
“We have the unfortunate news to share that we are officially closed,” the Instagram post read. “It has been an honor to serve the Allston community for nearly two decades. We are happy to be a part of all your crazy memories, your favorite Thursday night plans, where you met your best friends, and of course the iconic black cards.”
The Allston location, open since 2011, Eater Boston reports, was just one of more than a dozen Tavern in the Square locations across New England, part of a local chain. The group that owns Tavern in the Square also runs other restaurant-bar joints like The Broadway and The Playwright, both in South Boston.
Tavern in the Square also announced more expansion plans of the brand this year, with three more locations coming to New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The Allston location had major renovations done to the space as recently as 2017 that included interior updates and a new menu that included shared bites, bar food staples, beers, and fishbowls.
The bar, nicknamed “TITS” by some patrons, was also known as a place to catch the game on its multiple big-screen TVs or to dance to music from the many DJs that came through Tavern in the Square.
“We want to firstly thank our hard working managers, servers, bartenders, kitchen crew, DJs, and door staff that made this location the place to be,” the Instagram post read. “We want to thank the endless support from our loyal guests, sports fans, and club room legends. End of an era, but forever in your memories.”
