Kann is building on its reputation as one of Portland best restaurants by being named one of the best in North America.
Chef Gregory Gourdet’s 3-year-old Haitian restaurant was named to the 50 Best restaurants list in an awards ceremony in Las Vegas on Thursday. It landed 27th on the prestigious list.
“In opening Kann three years ago, and the four years that went into opening it, our goal was unwavering: to spotlight traditional Haitian flavors alongside dishes inspired by the cuisines of the African and Caribbean diaspora locally, nationally and internationally,” Gourdet said in a news release. “I’m grateful to our team who embodies this purpose daily; their passion for learning and penchant for storytelling are the backbone of Kann.”
The award is the latest in a list of recognitions Gourdet and Kann have compiled. Kann won a James Beard Award for best new restaurant in 2023, and Gourdet has James Beards for best chef in the Northwest region and for his cookbook.
50 Best’s global restaurant list was created in 2002 and then in 2013 the publication began compiling regional lists. Earlier this year it announced that North America would be added and would cover restaurants in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. Restaurants in Mexico, Cuba and Dominican Republic will remain in the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurant list, according to the announcement.
