RIVERDALE — After an announcement from the city and months of resident speculation on social media about the project’s status, it’s official — Trader Joe’s is coming to Riverdale.
The new store, which will be located in the former Shopko lot at 4060 S. Riverdale Road, now appears on the Trader Joe’s website. Its impending arrival was announced last year by Mayor Braden Mitchell during a livestreamed event. Construction on the space that will house the popular grocery chain — in the same building as Riverdale’s Ashley Furniture store — has been ongoing for several months.
While he couldn’t offer a specific timeline for the completion of construction or a grand opening date, Riverdale Community Development Director Brandon Cooper told the Standard-Examiner that great progress is being made and residents will likely be shopping there sometime in 2025.
“We’re excited, obviously, to see the confirmation on their side. It wasn’t any surprise to us; we announced it in December knowing that they would likely announce it at a much later date,” Cooper said. “We didn’t know when, but obviously we’re happy that they’ve done that. It’s getting closer to opening, and they typically like to announce things closer to when they have an opening date.”
A June announcement from Trader Joe’s about the location read: “We are proud to be joining the neighborhood, and to continue our commitment to providing nourishment to the surrounding communities through our Neighborhood Shares program. Our Crew is working hard so we can open our doors.”
The Riverdale location will be the sixth Trader Joe’s in the Beehive State and the only store north of Salt Lake City. A seventh Utah location is planned in Holladay on the former Cottonwood Mall lot.
Cooper characterized the store’s arrival as another important addition to what is arguably the go-to commercial corridor for people living and working in Weber and northern Davis counties.
“Any and every new business that we get is contributory to our sales tax base, and our sales tax base is the largest part of our revenue budget. So, we love to see new businesses,” Cooper said. “Obviously, Riverdale is built to be the regional shopping area for Weber County. So, that’s a role that we’ve embraced, and we support our local businesses. We love them, and we’re doing a lot to recruit new folks as much as we can.
“Trader Joe’s will contribute to that greatly. It’s going to be the only one north of Salt Lake, so we’ll have a lot of traffic from Weber, Davis, Box Elder, Cache (counties) — all these areas. So, we think it’ll contribute significantly, and that’s something that will help us in the long term.”
