The San Antonio Spurs showcased a defensive clinic led by its young superstar Victor Wembanyama during their lopsided 114-94 victory over the Portland Trailblazers in the ongoing NBA regular season on December 22, 2024.
Wembanyama was a one-man wrecking truck for the Spurs and single-handedly anchored San Antonio in the paint with 10 recorded blocks, matching his career high in the defensive department.
The French stalwart was everywhere on the court and was efficient with his help defense on the weak side, where he tallied most of his rejections.
Wembanyama already had five blocks in the first half, with all of them coming from face-to-face isolation stops and 1-on-1 drives to the basket.
In the last two quarters, Wembanyama tallied most of his blocks from help defenses and double teams, with the last one on Portland’s Deni Avdija when he attempted a high-flying layup.
Aside from his 10 blocks, Wembanyama also stuffed the stat sheets and registered 30 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, in just 29 minutes of playing time.
The 20-year-old star had the chance to break his previous record but the San Antonio coaching staff decided to pull him out early in the game due to the one-sided beating they hosted on the Trailblazers.
Wembanyama is already in All-Star mode in his past five games, averaging 29 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and 5.2 blocks against Portland, Atlanta, Minnesota, and New Orleans.
It was a wire-to-wire victory for the Spurs after pulling away in the second frame, extending their narrow five-point cushion to 16 points at the end of the first half.
With Wembanyama’s defensive showing, Portland failed to regain their confidence in the second half and relied on their outside shooting to avoid getting rejected in the paint.
However, the Trailblazers shot a dismal 12/43 from the three-point area and only had nine total attempts from the free-throw line.
Backstopping Wembanyama’s stellar performance was backup center Charles Bassey who achieved his second double-double of the season with 16 markers and 12 rebounds.
Despite the limited offensive numbers, veteran floor general Chris Paul orchestrated the San Antonio offense to perfection and dished out a team-high nine assists alongside four rebounds and six points.
The Spurs will aim for their third consecutive win on December 24, 2024, against Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers while Portland seeks to bounce back on the same date against the Dallas Mavericks.
