NEW ORLEANS – Teagan Symons was named as a recipient of the 2024 American Volleyball Coaches Association Diversity Award. As part of the award, Symons will be invited to attend the AVCA Volleyball Convention in Louisville.
Symons is in her first year as an assistant coach with the Privateers after having been hired over the summer by Head Coach Ashley Preston. Symons has been enrolled at the University of New Orleans since 2021.
In her young and budding career, Symons was previously the junior high head coach at First Baptist Christian. In 2023, she helped First Baptist to an undefeated record in district and a district title for the first time in school history.
Symons has also worked club volleyball with children ranging from age 13 to 15 and she was the league beach volleyball coach at Pointbreak Beach Court in Slidell.
It’s the latest for Coach Preston in her journey to continue to empower young women. Former student-athlete, Micah Hall was selected to attend the NCAA Student Leadership Forum in 2023. And former student-athlete, Mauri Carver received an NCAA Ethnic Minority Scholarship also in 2023.
ASHLEY PRESTON
“Teagan getting this award as a first year graduate assistant in Division I is huge not only for her but for our institution. It shows we have a hotbed of young, talented people who aspire to be coaches. I’m so proud because I think Teagan is going to be a great one.”
TEAGAN SYMONS
“I was thrilled when I found out I received this honor. I honestly believe it was due to the amazing head coach I’m under in Coach Preston. She has given me a bunch of opportunities to coach and show what I can do and how I can be a better coach. Coach Preston has been one of my biggest supporters.”
