ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — One man is dead, and another is being treated for injuries after an overnight shooting in southeast Atlanta, according to police.

Officers responded to a call that a person was shot around 1:20 a.m. at 376 Cologne Dr. SE. Police believe the shooting happened between relatives following a dispute.

According to police, officers said they’ve seen an increase in fights ending with gunfire.

“Here recently we have seen tempers flaring and erupting into gunfire. But it’s unfortunate that we have to have another incident end in gunfire,” Lt. Christapher Butler with the Atlanta Police Department said.

The daughter of the man who was killed tells Atlanta News First that she speaks to her father daily, and had just gotten off of the phone with him when he was shot and killed.

“I actually just talked to him a few minutes before he passed. This was a situation that just went too far. This was the day that it actually happened,” daughter Jiquala Stone said.

She wants to tell other families to take family arguments seriously, if a family member is concerned.

“When someone tells you that they’re in trouble… like, when they’re done? Show up. Because you never know when it’ll be the last time. Don’t just brush it off and be like ‘oh okay it’s just family issues.’ No. Show up,” Stone said.

The man who survived was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, and is expected to be okay.

The investigation is ongoing.
