10 Things Miami-Dade Must Do Now to Become #1

I was born in Miami-Dade. I went to school here, went to college here, and built my life here. I raised our children here. They went to college here. Miami-Dade is not just a place I write about. It is my home, my community, and the place that has shaped my life. I have watched it grow from a collection of neighborhoods into one of the most important communities in the world. And I believe our greatest days are still ahead.

The question is simple: Will we be satisfied with being one of the biggest, or will we demand to become the best? We have the talent, the diversity, the international connections, the business community, the universities, the airport, and the seaport. We have everything needed to lead. Now we need a vision and a plan. Here are 10 things Miami-Dade must do right now.

  1. Create a Real Public Scoreboard
For years, I have written that government cannot improve what it does not measure. A county with a multi-billion-dollar budget should have a real-time dashboard showing spending, contracts, vendors, projects, goals, and results. The public should know what is working, what is not, and where improvements are needed. Transparency creates trust, and accountability creates better government.
  2. Fix Traffic and Move Faster
Traffic affects every resident. It takes away time with our families, hurts businesses, and lowers our quality of life. We have studied the problem long enough. It is time to use technology, improve traffic flow, and complete transportation projects faster.
  3. Make Housing Attainable
The people who teach our children, protect our communities, and keep our economy moving should be able to afford to live here. Growth is important, but it must be planned responsibly. We must create opportunities while protecting the character of our neighborhoods.
  4. Keep Public Safety Number One
A great community begins with safety. We must continue supporting our police officers, firefighters, and first responders with the training, equipment, and technology they need. Safe neighborhoods create strong families, successful businesses, and thriving communities.
  5. Become the Most Business-Friendly County in America
Miami-Dade should be the place where entrepreneurs come to build their dreams. Government should remove unnecessary barriers, speed up permits, and become a partner in economic success. When businesses grow, jobs are created, families prosper, and the entire county benefits.
  6. Think 50 Years Ahead
Too often, governments focus on the next election instead of the next generation. Miami-Dade must plan for flooding, infrastructure, transportation, technology, and future growth. The decisions we make today will define what Miami-Dade looks like for our children and grandchildren.
  7. Remember Who Pays the Bills
Government exists to serve the people. The taxpayer is the customer, and every department should operate with that understanding. Calls should be returned. Problems should be solved. Service should be measured. Excellence should be expected.
  8. Protect Our Quality of Life
Success is not measured only by economic growth. It is measured by the quality of life we provide our residents. Great parks, beautiful neighborhoods, cultural institutions, clean streets, and public spaces are investments in our community.
  9. Prepare for the Economy of Tomorrow
Artificial intelligence, healthcare, technology, aviation, and emerging industries will shape the next generation of jobs. Miami-Dade must strengthen the connection between education and business so our children and workforce are prepared to lead the future.
  10. Demand Accountability
Promises are easy. Results matter. Every elected official, every department, and every project should have clear goals and public measurements. We should celebrate success, correct failures, and never stop striving to improve.

The Bottom Line
I believe Miami-Dade can become the #1 county in America — not because we are perfect, but because we have the people, the talent, and the ambition to get there. The next 25 years will determine whether we simply continue to grow or whether we become the model community others study. That choice is ours. We can accept average, or we can demand excellence. I know my choice. Make Miami-Dade #1.
