2 dead, 5 hurt in multiple shootings after Fourth of July celebrations

Boston police said one person was killed and a second person injured in a daytime shooting Friday in a residential neighborhood in Mattapan. It was the latest shooting in a string of gun violence scattered across several neighborhoods in Boston over the Fourth of July holiday. A total of seven people were struck by gunfire, killing two people.Investigators and prosecutors are asking the public for information about the crimes.”We didn’t declare victory during the dip in shootings and homicides in Boston and we won’t declare defeat during a spike. What we will do is focus ever harder on what works: smart policing, effective prosecutions and deep community involvement,” District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement. “After the violence we saw on Friday we need community involvement more than ever. I urge anyone with information about these incidents to contact police.”The latest incident happened just before 12:30 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Gladeside Ave. and Donwood Terrace in a tree-lined residential section of Mattapan. When police arrived, they found a man and woman inside of a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. Police said both victims were transported to Boston area hospitals. The man, whose name was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police said the woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Video form Sky5 showed crime scene markers around a home and vehicle that appeared to crash through a fence.Police said the preliminary investigation into the shooting suggested it was not a random attack, but they did not provide any additional information. The shooting came just hours after three separate shootings after Boston celebrated the Fourth of July.Police responded to 297 Centre St. in Jamaica Plain at 1:26 a.m. where three adults were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries from gunshot wounds.At 1:33 a.m., police were called to 618 Shawmut Ave. in Roxbury. A man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.Neighbor Nisha Torres said she heard 6 to 7 shots while she and her baby were trying to sleep. “I jumped out of bed. It just didn’t sound like fireworks at all,” Torres said. “The shootings, they just never stop. Especially during the summertime.”In Dorchester, police said one person suffered life-threatening injuries after a shooting just before 6 a.m. at a Mobil Gas Station on Blue Hill Ave.No arrests have been made in any incident and investigations are ongoing, according to police.Boston Mayor Michelle Wu hopes to combat the rise of violence seen around the Fourth of July holiday. “We actually had a series of planning meetings ahead of time, analyzing historical locations where there had been more incidents of violence and deploying more resources ahead of time to those locations,” she said. “We have more follow up meetings already in progress with the communities that have been affected and some of the individual agencies.”
