WAHSATCH, Summit County — Two people were hospitalized and traffic was significantly impacted following a two-vehicle crash on I-80 near the Utah-Wyoming border Friday.
The incident happened at about 10:30 a.m., according to the Utah Department of Transportation. A Chrysler Pacifica was eastbound on I-80 near the town of Wahsatch, at the northeastern end of Echo Canyon in Summit County, when it drifted into another lane and collided with the back of a semitruck, Utah Highway Patrol said.
The collision caused the driver of the Pacifica to lose control of the vehicle, which veered off the right side of the road and into an embankment before rolling, according to UHP.
The occupants of the Pacifica, an 87-year-old man and an “elderly female,” sustained serious injuries and were taken to a hospital, UHP Lt. Cam Roden said. One patient was transported by helicopter, and the other by ambulance; UHP noted the passenger in the Pacifica was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the semitruck wasn’t injured.
Photos taken in the area Friday afternoon show traffic backed up for miles on eastbound I-80. Two lanes were blocked for most of the day, according to UDOT’s traffic website, but all eastbound lanes had reopened by 4 p.m.
