NEW YORK CITY (TND) — A 20-year-old man was shot Monday near where officers arrested several people during a New York City Pride parade, according to police.

The victim was shot twice near Washington Square Park, but was purportedly in stable condition after the shooting. Police are investigating the identity of the shooter.

The New York City Police Department took 10 people into custody at the city’s Pride parade after fights broke out Sunday, the agency said. Several people were seen throwing punches and pushing each other onto the ground, according to footage shared on social media.

During the parade, Mayor Eric Adams celebrated its participants, insisting the LGBT community has a right to express itself in the city.

This … march means a lot to all of us … 55 years later, we’re showing that we’re standing on this solid stone, that right here in New York, we have the largest LGBTQ+ community,” he said. “And, while other people across the globe are trying to harm this community, we stand up here. You have the right to be who you are, and where you are is New York.”

Other disruptions at Pride events have made headlines in June, with several pro-Palestine protesters interrupting the Philadelphia Pride March weeks ago, according to video shared on social media.

The protesters stood in front of a drumline advancing toward the city’s “Gayborhood” and held banners opposing the march while denouncing Israel’s actions in its war with Hamas terrorists.

The protesters also shouted pro-Palestine chants, including “PPP, KKK, IOF are all the same,” referring to the Ku Klux Klan and Israel Defense Forces. It is unclear what the “PPP” chant referred to.
