Happy International Women’s Day and Rebellious Magazine for Women’s Birthday! We’re so glad you’re here.

International Women’s Day has been celebrated since the early 1900s as women demanded shorter working hours, better pay and voting rights. Sound familiar?

“International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8, honors the achievements of women across all aspects of life — social, economic, cultural, and political – while also advocating for gender equality.” — IWD

I don’t need to tell any of you why it’s more important than ever that we celebrate how far we’ve come, mourn the ground we’ve lost and commit ourselves to moving forward.

Here are some ways to do that this year, with a focus on voting with your wallet; corporations will never love and support us as much as we love and support ourselves.

Let’s go!

1. Dine at a Women-owned Restaurant

Who loves you, feminist foodies? We do! Enjoy this running and delish list of women-owned restaurants and bakeries in Chicago and women-powered kitchens in the Chicago area. Got a women-owned favorite that we missed? Let us know! 14 Parish Restaurant & Rhum Bar Owner: Racquel Fields Cuisine: Caribbean Neighborhood: Hyde Park Alpana Owner:…

2. Go to the International Women’s Day Dance

The LBTQ Giving Council of Chicago Foundation for Women’s dance is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 8 at Effortless Look HQ, featuring DJs Gloria and Sandra Suave, appetizers, open bar, a silent auction and more. All proceeds directly support grants for organizations and programs that uplift lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning women, girls, and gender non-binary/non-conforming folks in the Chicago area.

3. Support Women’s Sports

Women’s Sports Teams in Chicago

Confession: I put off making this list of women’s sports teams in Chicago because I figured that it must already exist elsewhere and I didn’t want to duplicate efforts. Yeah, not so much. I don’t know why I’m surprised: Female athletes make less money, get less exposure and are less likely to get lucrative sponsorship…

4. Visit the International Women’s Day Market

Admission is free at the 4th Annual International Women’s Day Market at Artifact Events, supporting women-owned businesses in the Lincoln Square Ravenswood area. Look forward to pop-up shops, food, drinks and badass local business owners. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8 and Sunday, March 9.

5. Support Chicago’s Only Independent Feminist Newsroom Owned by a Mouthy Black Lesbian Feminist (It Me)

Happy Women’s History & Rebellious Magazine Birthday Month!

Welp, March 2025, no pressure, but we’re looking to you to save us.  Save us from the erasure of our history, our safety and our human rights by reminding us of how Rebellious, strong and unstoppable we truly are.  Rebellious Magazine is counting on you, March, to successfully launch our most ambitious solo fundraising effort…
