Atlanta police say a 5-year-old was injured at an apartment swimming pool on July 19, 2024.  (FOX 5)

ATLANTA – Atlanta police are investigating an incident where a 5-year-old was rushed to the hospital with injuries sustained while swimming in the pool.

It happened a little before 6:40 p.m. Friday at the Station R apartments located along Moreland and Seaboard avenues. According to the Atlanta Police Department, its officers found the girl unresponsive and not breathing.

Medics rushed her in critical condition to an area hospital. Her current condition has not been released.

The state also requires several essential lifesaving devices to be present:

  • Life Ring: A flotation device attached to a rope, which must be readily accessible within the pool area. The rope should be long enough to reach across the pool.
  • Reaching Pole: A non-telescoping pole, at least 12 feet long, must be available for rescuing swimmers in distress.
  • First Aid Kit: A well-stocked first aid kit must be on-site and easily accessible for minor injuries or medical emergencies.
  • Emergency Telephone: An emergency telephone or another communication device, with posted instructions for contacting emergency services, must be present in the pool area. This device should be hardwired and weatherproof.

Additionally, each pool must be enclosed by a fence at least 4 feet high, with a securely latching door. If there is no lifeguard on duty, a sign stating “No Lifeguard on Duty” along with emergency contact information must be posted.
