2,274 people registered to run in the Atlanta Mission 5K which raised over $100,000 for the organization.
ATLANTA — More than 2,200 runners and walkers filled Baker Street in Atlanta, lacing up for a race benefiting the Atlanta Mission.
Participants of all experience levels took part, with some using the event as a way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
“She loves it too. She loves it too. Definitely going to have to buy her a nice dinner tonight,” said Cole Dewey.
While some showed up as couples, others joined as teams and walking groups.
“We are rhythm walking to some house music,” said Debra Jones, laughing.
For competitive runners, the race was a chance to chase a fast finish. Gaines Diseker crossed the line first, completing the 3.1-mile course in 17 and a half minutes.
“It feels good. Rocking Peach State Run Club out of Gwinnett,” Diseker said.
Not everyone on the course was a seasoned runner. For Michael Hamilton, this was his first 5K.
“Everything inside my body was screaming, ‘it’s over,’ but I had to keep going. But it was good,” Hamilton said.
Organizers say the event raised well over $100,000 for the Atlanta Mission. The funds will help provide housing and critical support services for people in need.
