Spurs C Luke Kornet is calling on the Hawks to “cancel a promotional night the club has scheduled with an Atlanta strip club‚” according to Tom Orsborn of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. Kornet, a “devout Roman Catholic,” made the request Monday in the “latest post for the blog he publishes on the website Medium.” He explained his desire to see the Hawks’ nix the promotional night with Magic City “centers on his belief that the NBA should ‘desire to protect and esteem women,’ many of whom he wrote ‘work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world.’” Kornet wrote, “We should promote an atmosphere that is protective and respectful of the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love.” Hawks EVP/Chief Communications Officer Garin Narain said, “We have no comment” (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 3/2). THE ATHLETIC’s Jared Weiss noted though Kornet did “not mention his faith in his open letter to the Hawks, it has been at the core of his prior stories on his blog.” He wrote one story on “how his faith helped him cope with losing his shooting ability,” and the blog was “founded on his passion for church architecture and community.” Kornet was “clear about trying to rally supporters in the league to speak up before the promotion occurs” on March 16 (THE ATHLETIC, 3/2).
